The X-prize

Having always had a deep seated desire to travel into space, I have avidly followed the progress of the X-prize. It was a $10 million prize that went to the first group to reach 100km into space in a reusable space vehicle twice in two weeks. On the 4th October 2004, Mojave Aerospace led by Burt Rutan and Paul Allen in their craft SpaceShipOne took the prize. The X-prize has been an inspiring competition and has sparked a flood of innovation. Richard Branson's Virgin Group formed Virgin Galactic to use the technology developed by Burt Rutan to offer affordable sub-orbital space tourism for the first time in our history. The first trips should be offered in 2011, at $200,000 per trip I have some saving to do!

Hluhluwe game reserve

I am always at my most relaxed when game watching in Hluhluwe - KwaZulu. Out in the bush one can see for hundreds of kilometres unhindered by the imposition of buildings or any other human presence. The 'big five' - lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo and leopard - inhabit this small patch of Eden and I love the experience of a 'night drive' where one can often see a kill. My family have been visiting this reserve for generations and it is therefore close to my heart.
